Description

This sub-project is an empirical investigation into the changes in production environment and creative workflow in Japan’s manga and anime industry under new technological conditions. Specifically, it focuses on how digital platforms such as Netflix and emergent generative AI technologies are shaping the industrial structure and labour conditions, and therefore, reconfiguring power relationships.

By conducting interviews with creators and experts in relevant fields (e.g., copyright law experts), we explore and reveal both the opportunities and challenges posed by new digital technologies. This sub-project will also advance our understanding of the interplay between technology and cultural production theoretically from a global perspective, developing Japan’s manga and anime industry as an important reference point.
